We’re continuing our back-to-school series today with a very unusual kind of teacher. Maree doesn’t teach in a regular classroom, she teaches on film and TV sets in Toronto, Canada! Her students can be anywhere from six to seventeen, and she can see them for a day or two or several months, or for part of the year over several years.
Growing up, Maree was in the drama club and loved Shakespeare, and at one point growing up thought she might be a historical consultant on films. Instead she’s found her way into the world of film and tv by an entirely different route. After leaving a traditional teaching job when her family moved to Toronto, she became curious about the signs of the film industry she spotted while exploring the city and wondered who was teaching the kids on those sets. Soon, it was Maree!
Maree Martinez fell in love with Shakespeare at ten, then thought she might be a historical consultant on films, before deciding to leave her PhD program at Cambridge because what she really wanted to do was teach. After teaching history at a middle school, she moved with her family to Toronto, where she noticed signs of the city's film production as she explored with her son. She wondered who taught the kids on those sets, and soon enough, she was.
