Today, Kelly Suzanne Saulsberry is the Director of Policy and Outreach for the Commission on Human Relations for the City of Chicago. When she was a recent college grad, she wasn't sure what path to pursue. Her parents' civic engagement, her interest in understanding diverse perspectives, and her extracurricular activities in college and as an adult, all helped propel her toward public policy work.
Many people figure out what they want to do when they're young and pursue that. But many people (including me) didn't know what they wanted to do, even coming out of college. I really enjoyed hearing Kelly's perspective on taking some time to figure things out.
“Born and bred” Chicagoan Kelly Suzanne Saulsberry now works for the City as the Director of Policy and Outreach at the Chicago Commission on Human Relations. She tells us about the roots of her passion for civic engagement and social justice, crises of confidence, investing in herself, and that she’d tell her teenage self, “Girl, you’re all right.”
